First graders publish class book on historical figures
First graders at Murray Elementary School became young authors as they worked through the writing process — pre-writing, drafting and revising — to produce their best work.
As part of Unit 7 in Benchmark Advance, which emphasizes historical figures and informational writing, students created a collaborative class book featuring short biographies. Each student selected a notable individual, researched key facts about the person’s life and accomplishments, and wrote an informational page to contribute to the shared volume. The project strengthened skills in identifying important details, organizing information and writing in a clear, factual style — foundational elements of civic literacy.
To deepen the learning, students partnered with art teacher Ms. Roche to create visual representations of their chosen figures. The artwork allowed them to connect research findings with creative expression and better understand the individuals who shaped history.
Students showed high engagement throughout the project. One said, “I liked learning about someone famous and writing the facts in my own words.” Another noted, “My favorite part was drawing the picture that matched my story.”
Families supported the effort by helping gather information at home, reading age-appropriate articles and discussing important details. Their involvement reinforced students’ confidence and understanding.
The completed book showcases the students’ informational writing skills and highlights individuals whose contributions have had a lasting positive impact. Through the project, first graders at Murray Elementary strengthened research and writing abilities while making meaningful connections across subjects — an approach that supports DoWEA’s focus on developing informed, patriotic citizens who value America’s history and principles.
